John Bolton Wood is one of Australia’s best loved baritones. He still makes regular appearances with Opera Australia. He is a character actor, singer and ractonteur to great acclaim. John is visiting Beechworth as Guest Vocal Coach for the Opera Scholars Australia Winter School. Come and hear his anecdotes about his life as an opera singer and the extraordinary roles he has played from Dr Bartolo in the Barber of Seville to Old Deuteronomy in Cats! You will also be treated to a few of John’s favourite songs. This is a free concert open to all.

Do you have a broken household item you’d like fixed but need a hand to do so? Then this is your opportunity. This month we’re featuring mending, tuning skis and checking bindings, sharpening knives and garden tools and bike repairs. Our Repair Café is a free meeting place to bring along broken household items such as furniture, clothing, battery-operated appliances, scratched CDs-DVDs and bikes and learn how to fix them with the help of experienced, volunteer repairers. You can also bring along small, blunt garden tools like secateurs and we’ll show you how to sharpen them.

Opera Scholars Australia presents a winter opera twilight concert being the culmination of the week long Winter Opera School held in Beechworth. 23 rising opera stars will sing music by Bizet, Beethoven, Puccini, Verdi, Sondheim and more. Up till now, this has always been a sell-out summer event, much loved by opera lovers from far and wide. Voices in the Twilight has now moved to July! We invite you to indulge in the winter experience and be warmed by the beauty you will behold.

Changing our eating patterns to include just one plant based meal a day can make measurable improvements to our health and wellbeing. Those eating healthy vegan or vegetarian diets fare better than those eating even a healthy omnivorous diet. This series of Workshops show how to make the change to a more plant-based diet with simple and delicious recipes, shopping tips and support, to improve your diet for health and longevity. Anni Turnbull is a passionate advocate for the health benefits of plants, having completed a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition through E-Cornell University. Over the next 4 Workshops (second Saturday of each month), Anni will entice you with the delicious flavours and textures plant based cooking offers. Indigo Shire Council are supporting Dying to Know Day 2019 by hosting a Death Cafe. Nicole Stephens, End of Life Doula, from Stepping Beyond will facilitate the cafe over morning tea generously supplied by local businesses. A Death Cafe provides a safe space for all people to come together to talk an ask questions about planning for end of life. There will also be representatives from NE Funerals, The Beechworth Cemetery Trust, Helen McGowan – Will specialist and End of Life Planner, Cynthia Bird – Changeworks, Health professionals specialising in advanced care directorates and many more who will be available to talk to.

The Community Sharing Feast is finally back after a short break to get the hall restored! Quercus Beechworth believes sharing a meal helps bring people in our community together. Meals are prepared and served in the spirit of co-operation by community volunteers with people coming together to share a meal and engage in conversation. The Community Sharing Feast is a way for residents, both young and old or new to the area to meet up with people they know or make new friends. Take the night off from cooking to enjoy a free and nutritious meal open to all the community. We use produce from the community food garden and donated food from the Albury/Wodonga Regional FoodShare for the feast. Community Sharing Feast is an alcohol free event. Clare will answer your questions regarding plants, pruning, etc. and how she plans her programme around the variable seasons and weather conditions. 2 PM – Meet up with Robert (resident) who will show you his collection of Dioscoria (Elelphant type) plants. Robert has one of the largest and oldest collections in Australia. A garage sale of collectables will also be happening , along with Devonshire Tea and a Sausage Sizzle from 12.30 PM at a minimal cost. Come and join the residents and management for a relaxed afternoon. Natalie from UPA will also be available to answer and of your questions in regard to Retirement Village living. Venue 2 – 29 Wood Street, Beechworth – rear garden 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm: Practical Garden Workshop in a home garden on fruit trees by a commercial grower covering such items as: pruning, trapping, netting, spraying, fruit disposal etc.

Home gardeners, commercial growers, community groups and interested community members are invited along to the “No Flies on Us” Fruit Fly Expo and Workshop and hear first-hand from guest speaker and industry experts of the value of working together to stop the spread of the Queensland fruit Fly. Beechworth Lions Club urges the community to get attend the Expo to learn more about the simple steps home gardeners and the broader community can take to protect against this pest. As part of the Expo, there will be home gardener and grower forums, trap making sessions and opportunities to better understand the more technical aspects about how we control fruit fly. The trap making session will be hands on. Traps made can be taken home and placed in the community member’s garden.

12 week course commencing Monday 14th October 6pm – 7:30pm. Learn Italian in Beechworth. From meeting people to ordering gelato, asking directions and tucking into that spaghetti bolognese. This course offers you the opportunity to learn Italian to travel, help communicate in your workplace or to use with family and friends. Design is recognised as one of the best concept stores in Australia (Life Instyle – 2018). In 2017 LUC. was a finalist in the Retailer of the Year GALA LIfe INstyle Awards and then went on to win Retailer of the Year in 2018. This year Lucy won the Small Business Category – Telstra Business Woman of the Year in Tasmania. Lucy regularly speaks at Reed Gift Fairs and Life INstyle on store design, visual merchandising and Destination Retailing.

This seminar touches on the why and how of whole food plant-based nutrition and includes evidence-based principles for optimal health. It provides a good overview for those new to a plant-based diet or to those already plant-based who are trying to optimise their health through diet. Jenny and Malcolm are both qualified nutritionists (Deakin Uni) and have completed the Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate from eCornell. Malcolm is a practising GP and Board Certified Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner. Jenny is also a qualified wellness coach.
