Bestselling author Darry Fraser will be visiting the library to talk about her new novel , The Widow of Ballarat set against the backdrop of 19th century Bendigo and the goldfields of Ballarat. Her previous novels include the successful Daughter of the Murray and Where the Murray River Runs. The Widow of Ballarat will be available for purchase, courtesy of Beechworth Books. The exhibition is a visual journey through the landscape of an 8,000ha gazetted Nature Refuge in the Desert Uplands Bioregion of Central West Queensland in the South Galilee Basin. Curated by Maureen Cooper, it is not strictly an art exhibition but  an informative environmental experience that includes photography and paintings. CALLING ALL MAPPING ENTHUSIASTS! INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER MAP BUILDING This course is for people who love maps and would like to explore ways of building them  using very powerful and freely available computer software – QGIS (check it out on Google yourself!) Participants will be introduced to computer cartography by building a topographic map of the Indigo Shire on their computers learning the principles of map building (cartography) and effective ways of graphically communicating descriptions of places using the software. You will discover where to access geospatial data to illustrate land use and changes in the environment. You will learn how to build thematic maps that illustrate things like the spread of weeds, voting preferences across Australia, crime statistics for local government areas or climatic changes across South Eastern Australia. Participants will need to bring along their laptop and have access to the internet at home. Participants will complete assignments at home and have access to on-line support between sessions.    Commencing  – Sunday 9 September 2018,  from 2pm to 4pm Ongoing – Second Sunday of each Month to 9 December, 2018 Cost: $10.00 pp per session Suitable for Ages 14 PLUS

100 years ago on the 14th of December 1918 a concert welcomed home the Beechworth ANZAC’s. This concert is to commemorate that historic event. The event will feature the recently returned pipe organ, music and recitations from era both classical and popular. Dress to impress and to create the historic atmosphere from the era (Optional.) Ellen will demonstrate her ideas for capturing light and dark and will teach how to enchant the viewer with your own particular vision while using a variety of techniques. Ellen’s own body of work continues to thrive because she loves combining teaching and painting and sharing the pain and ecstatic joy of creating a work of art. Ellen trained as a tonal realist specializing in oils and for over 35 years this has proved to be a wonderful foundation from which to develop her own unique painting style.

A special get together to welcome Dr Jenni Munday, Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Arts and Education, Charles Sturt University and her research team – Eileen Clark and Alison Watts to MDHAS. Jenni is a valued member of the Art Society’s management committee. They will speak about research they do doing into Beechworth Cemetery and the families of former residents of Mayday Hills; the former staff of MDHAS and ‘dark tourism’. It will also be an opportunity for Dr David Lawrence, our resident MDHAS archivist, to tell us his plans for the Art Society’s archive.
